Society pledges £14,500 in grants to five churches

Five churches have been awarded a total of £14,500 by the Round Tower Churches Society.

The latest grants include at least £6,000 for St Andrew, Mutford, and also £2,000 for St Mary, Long Stratton, it was agreed at the latest committee meeting in December.

Since May, the Society has also given £5,000 to St Peter, Brooke, and £2,000 to All Saints, Threxton, plus £1,000 to St Margaret, Topcroft and £500 to All Saints, Stuston.

Mutford’s tower need urgent work, which is why the Society has agreed to help with the cost of providing scaffolding for the repairs. In addition, the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust has given £5,700 and the Norfolk Churches Trust £10,000 at its latest November quarterly council meeting.

St Mary, Long Stratton, which had zinc stolen from the south aisle last month, also has other challenges include repairs to various sections of the roof, and an urgent need to repair/ replace rain water goods including guttering.

The latest awards of £14,500 bring the total pledged to churches since March 31, 2021 to an overall total of £32,500. This also includes the following outstanding awards –

£5,000 – St Mary, Surlingham.

£4,000 – St Peter, Haveringland and to St Peter and St Paul, Tuttington.

£3,000 – St Mary, Beachamwell.

£2,000 – St Margaret, Breckles

The Norfolk Churches Trust also made grants to Topcroft, £4,500, and £3,000 to All Saints, Threxton. An award of £1,800 was made to St Peter, Swainsthorpe.
