Keen interest in round towers from retired professionals’ group

A north Norfolk group of retired professionals was briefed on the Society’s golden jubilee celebrations. And members also snapped up about 20 copies of Stephen Hart’s revised 32-page full colour guide, East Anglian Round Tower Churches.

Michael Pollitt, who is the Society’s vice-chairman and editor of The Round Tower was invited to the 2024 opening meeting of Cromer & Sheringham Probus Club on January 9. About 30 members met at the Links, West Runton, for a splendid luncheon and a talk on the “Very Special Churches of Norfolk.”

He said, incidentally, that the nearest round tower church to the club’s meeting venue was on the other side of the Cromer Ridge at Aylmerton. And the best-selling author, J K Rowling, writing as Robert Galbraith, has set her latest thriller – The Running Grave featuring her private detective Cormoran Strike – around the church of St John the Baptist. Her fictional character visited the church and was given a warm welcome. She even signed the visitors’ book in May 2022 and ironically, the next visitor the following month was the Society’s secretary ‘Lyn Stilgoe.

Will a round tower church feature in a future television episode of her latest best-seller?
