Chairman’s talk at Ilketshall St Andrew church

It was a lively evening as the society’s chairman Stuart Bowell gave a talk about Ilketshall St Andrew church.

Members will also have an opportunity to join the society’s opening tour and visit this church on Saturday, May 9.

It is the first church to be visited, starting at 10am before leaving to Ilketshall St Margaret and then Hardwick St Margaret.

Mr Bowell spoke to almost 30 local residents and villagers about their church on Friday, April 10, and included aspects of its history and other interesting features.

The Rev Mark Bee, priest in charge and who hails from Beccles was present. He has responsibility for some 14 churches.

Fortunately, the churchwardens have managed to carry out some modest repairs to this church and taken advantage of the now-scrapped VAT reclaim scheme.

The Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme, which was the brainchild of former Chancellor Gordon Brown in 2001, ended on April 1, 2026  – the decision of Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy. Churches are now subject to the full 20pc VAT on repairs.

A number of items of society booklets and other items were sold and raised about £50.

Details of the Society’s free church tours can be found on the “events” tab on the website. Details of the Norfolk Church Tours are on the same web page plus the Postcodes and What3words addresses.

The society’s annual meeting will be held at 2.15pm at the Waveney Heritage Centre on Saturday, May 9.
